Job description:
Amnesty International UK (AIUK) is renowned and respected the world over for promoting and protecting human rights. Our credibility relies on our refusal to compromise our financial independence and integrity and for this reason much of our funding depends on the contributions of our membership and fundraising activities. An important example of this is our bookshops, which raise money by selling second-hand donated books both on and offline.

About the role
The Amnesty Bookshop in Kentish Town opened May 2019 and this role will be key in helping us building a thriving and successful bookshop. With the support of the Regional Manager you will be responsible for the day to day running of the shop ensuring that it is well presented, well stocked, delivers excellent customer care, is an interesting and vibrant place for customers and supporters to engage with Amnesty’s work, and importantly meets (and ideally exceeds) its income targets. You will be responsible for inspiring and coordinating the team of volunteers to support these goals, plus recruiting and training new volunteers as required.

About you
You will have retail experience, ideally within the charity sector, plus a real passion for books. Knowledge of the book trade (shop and online) and proven experience of managing a retail unit would also be an advantage. You will be very organised and resourceful, able to use your skills to run a shop efficiently, making the most of the stock, space and volunteer time available. Supervising a team of volunteers, you will have the ability to recruit, train, organise and motivate them, leading with an approachable and enthusiastic manner. You value excellent customer service and are able to inspire others towards it. This position will give you the opportunity to put your love of books together with your retail experience, and your belief in protecting human rights.

About us
Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, fairness, freedom and truth wherever they’re denied. Already our global network of seven million members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. Whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
