CRA renews Disability Confident status – and here’s why

More than eight million people of working age in the UK are disabled or have a health condition and disabled people are twice as likely to move out of work than non-disabled people.

Disability Confident is a free government scheme that supports employers to employ and keep disabled people in work. The scheme gives you free guidance and advice to help you do this.

A Disability Confident employer:

  • Challenges attitudes
  • Increases understanding of disability
  • Removes barriers for disabled people with long-term health conditions
  • Supports disabled people to fulfil their potential.

It was developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives to make it rigorous but easily accessible, particularly for smaller businesses.

As your trade association, it’s really important for us to show our commitment to a scheme of this nature, and hopefully encourage some of our members who haven’t signed up to do so.

It’s part of CRA’s wider commitment to be supporting equity, diversity and inclusion within the third sector. As well as renewing our Disability Confident status this year, we have also:

  • Promoted The Charity Retail Consultancy’s pride display competition and wider celebration of PRIDE month across charity retail
  • Shared an interview with co-founder of Proud Changemakers who campaign for positive change for LGBTQIA+ people working in charities
  • Introduced an additional request of corporate members to see a copy of their EDI policy
  • Introduced a code of conduct at our conference
  • Displayed signage in the toilets at conference promoting wellbeing, EDI and help if people felt uncomfortable on-site

How to get started with Disability Confident – it’s really easy!
The first step is to become Disability Confident Committed by identifying at least one thing that you can do that will make a difference for disabled people. For further information and to sign-up for the scheme please visit the Disability Confident government website.
