Facebook has this week enabled a donate button to be used by UK charities. The function has been available in the United States since 2015 and has raised millions of dollars for charities by people using the social networking website, which is the most popular in the world.
Charities can now enable a donate button on their page so users can give without having to leave Facebook. To apply in the UK, organisations must be registered with the Charity Commission, and will be verified by Facebook.
The donate button can be added to a Charity’s Facebook page and individual posts, making it easy for supporters to contribute in a few taps. Facebook will charge UK charities a five per cent fee for each donation, which they say covers costs and payment processing.
Anita Yuen, Strategic Partner Manager at Facebook, said: “We see this as a way to increase the opportunity for people to donate to good causes.”
