Habitat for Humanity Great Britain opens the first charity shop of its kind

Habitat for Humanity’s “ReStore” is a non-profit DIY chain, helping to ensure that home improvement remains accessible to all, rather than becoming a hobby for the privileged few.

London, 26 November 2024 – The Duke of Gloucester, Patron of Habitat for Humanity GB (Habitat GB), today opens a first-of-its-kind charity shop for Great Britain.

Habitat GB’s ReStore, funded thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, democratises DIY so more people can access the tools and materials needed to improve their living accommodation. Shoppers will find new and gently used renovation materials, white goods, kitchens and building materials at the flagship store. Habitat GB has chosen a site at the heart of Romford to launch what will be a chain of non-profit DIY centres. The launch site benefits from good transport links to the M25 and the Elizabeth Line.

Proceeds from ReStore sales help fund Habitat GB’s housing projects, providing affordable housing and home repairs for families in need.

ReStore also promotes environmental sustainability by diverting pre-loved items from landfills and supporting a circular economy. ReStore staff are helped by volunteers and are a key part of Habitat GB’s efforts to create affordable homes while reducing waste.

Dr Henrietta Blackmore, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Great Britain, said:

We are delighted to open Great Britain’s first ReStore, where conscious consumerism drives social impact. ReStores generate essential funding needed to propel Habitat’s work worldwide, and the GB team is hugely excited to be part of this social enterprise and further our contribution to creating affordable local housing and sustainable local communities.
