Here’s a new series for you to meet those wonderful CRA members who choose to head up our popular special interest groups. Today we’ll meet the AMAZING Claire Guise from Marie Curie, our longstanding Chair of the Health & Safety group and our go-to expert for H&S matters. We put ten questions to her.

1. How long have you worked in the charity retail sector?
12 years

2. What is your current role?
Head of Health and Safety at Marie Curie.

3. What is the best bit about your job?
Supporting our teams making care delivery and support possible for our patients and their families.

The variety of the role – community nursing, retail, fundraising, hospices, business services and people services.

4. And the most challenging?
So much to do, so little time – a small new health and safety team has been recruited to support me though.

5. Why did you want to become the chair of the Health & Safety special interest group?
The special interest group arrangements are a fantastic part of Charity Retail Association membership and it is fantastic to be able to influence meeting content for group members (and I like being bossy).

6. How does chairing the group fit in with your charity role – what are the benefits?
Chairing the group looks great on my CV but as above, it is also great to be able to influence meeting content. The networking and shared learning from these meetings is extremely valuable.

7. Can you give us one stand-out piece of insight you have gained from the interest group?
We all have similar health and safety challenges – charity retail is a very specific area and it is great to have a group focused on these specific challenges.

8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Running, listening to rock music and going to gigs and reading crime fiction.

9. What book are you reading at the moment?
Lee Child – Better off Dead

10. And finally, what is your best ever charity shop buy?
Oh my…there are so many – most of my clothes come from charity shops. If I had to pick one, a purple metallic handbag with leopard print lining (as purple is my favourite colour).

Thank you Claire!
