On 5 February 2018, I attended a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Charities and Volunteering (not to be confused with the APPG on Charity Retail, which we helped to set up in December). This meeting was a session to discuss the new Charity Tax Commission set up by the Government under Sir Nicholas Montagu, and he was there, as well as John Hemming, Chair of the Charity Tax Group, and Baroness Stowell, Chair elect of the Charity Commission.
Sir Nicholas introduced the new Commission’s remit, saying that it would be strategic rather than technical, and that its aim was to as much as to identify charities’ place in the socio-economic spectrum as to recommend specific reforms. As a member of the Commission’s reference group I shall be keeping a close eye on the progress made in the hope that, strategic as it may be, some specifics of value to the charity retail sector do emerge.
