The Charity Shop Gift Card is partnering with the Refugee Council so people arriving in the UK can shop with dignity and choice in the charity shops on their local high streets.
The two will be raising money that will be loaded onto gift cards and distributed to the refugee community to provide them with financial support which they can spend with national and regional charities.
The Charity Shop Gift Card is the only multi-retailer gift card for use solely in charity shops.
The first-of-its-kind gift card has been launched in partnership with the Charity Retail Association and is now being accepted by regional charities in most areas of the UK and at the national network of shops run by Marie Curie and with The Children’s Society, Sense, YMCA and Crisis rolling out soon.
The Refugee Council is a charity that works with refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK and exists to support and empower people who have made the heart-breaking decision to flee conflict, violence and persecution in their own country.
It works with over 13,000 women, men and children each year who are desperately seeking safety in the UK, many of whom arrive here with little more than the clothes on their backs.
Charity shops are perfectly placed to help them replace items that they may have lost.
Natasha Raspudic, Philanthrophy and Corporate Partnerships Officer from The Refugee Council, said “The Charity Shop Gift Card is a fantastic way for refugee communities to be able to access essential items in a way that promotes dignity and choice, and gives them the freedom to choose the items that would suit them best.”
Robin Osterley, Chief Executive of the Charity Retail Association, said “From time-to-time charity shops receive requests from refugee organisations to see how they can support refugees, who so often come to this country with very limited resources.
“Charity shops are great places for refugees to acquire the things they need for everyday life, that could be clothing for the whole family, household goods and furniture, and so much more. The Charity Shop Gift Card is a fantastic and risk-free way of allowing refugee organisations to help such people in their hours and days of need.”
100% of donated funds will be loaded onto gift cards and distributed by the Refugee Council.
Unspent funds on expired cards will be returned to the fundraising total to be loaded onto further cards.
People are also being encouraged to donate good quality preloved items to participating charity shops to extend the range of choice on offer to the refugees who receive the charity gift card as a means of support.
