Support needed for Kantamanto market after devastating fire
On 1 January and through the afternoon of 2 January, a fire destroyed over 60% of Kantamanto Market, the largest clothing market in Africa, and a major outlet for used clothing exported from the UK.
It is estimated that 8,000 people have been impacted and at least 10 of the 13 market sections sustained catastrophic damage. Or Foundation have worked with market leadership to support the clean up effort, taking community members to the hospital, covering hospital fees and securing medicine where necessary. Their team has set up tents in the market to provide water, first aid, masks, seating and shade while the rebuild commences. Or have committed an initial $1 Million to the rebuild and are currently raising funds to enable direct grants to individuals. They hope this will enable retailers to purchase bales or for a tailor to purchase a new sewing machine, once the rebuild is complete.
Or Foundation are looking for additional funds to help support these major efforts. We appreciate that these are difficult times for charity retail, however the African markets are an important outlet. Do please consider donating via your organisation or as individuals. This would be a strong show of solidarity and a moment to stand united in our support for Kantamanto.
