A WINNING FORMULA – USING VIDEO TO PROMOTE REUSE & RECYLING

We know charity shops were the original recyclers on the High Street, but it just doesn’t seem to occur to most people, so Wandsworth Oasis decided to make a bit of a song and dance about it…

ALL THAT CHAZZ…

Inspired by a presentation by Caroline Jones at the CRA conference in 2016 – Caroline wore a different outfit from CR UK for a year to pay tribute to her mum who she lost to cancer who loved fashion – we decided to ask a series of local known individuals to visit our charity shop, choose an outfit and strut their stuff down the Chazz Walk.  We’d do a photo shoot and make a short video which we would then promote on social media and on our website to promote the great things you can get in charity shops – all of which have been recycled.

First up on the Chazz Walk was the MP for Tooting (where we have 2 charity shops), Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, newly elected following the previous incumbent, Sadiq Khan, being elevated to Mayor of London.  Dr Rosena was a natural and chose a wonderful sparkly number which she also purchased.  You can see the video here.  As with all things, there are always some learnings – we realised not to keep the door of the shop open when filming in an area where the most common sound is a police siren no matter how hot it is (all captured nicely on the video!); don’t stand in front of a fan; and don’t wring your hands or any other funny little habit (even if you didn’t know you did it until you saw yourself on video!).  The video has had 140 views on Youtube, and more than 2000 on Facebook.  Dr Rosena was followed by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wendy Speck.  We aim to ask a community figure in to one of our shops every other month.

DON’T EVEN BIN YOUR BIN…

Our second initiative was to demonstrate that charity shops can find a new home for almost anything, even an old bin!  A local video company called Double Happy Films made a video for us called Don’t even Bin Your Bin.  We’ve played this video at a number of events and it is really popular.  We have even been asked to show it at local Rotary Club meetings…

MOVE OVER JOHN LEWIS…

Following our success at the Charity Retail Awards last summer (we won the award for innovation in charity retail), we were approached by a company called Truly Gifting who had created a series of recycled packaging for preloved Christmas gifts.  In conjunction with local community radio station, Wandsworth Radio, we came up with a Christmas ad and poster campaign…well, if John Lewis and Aldi can do it, so can we! – a two pronged message – help a good cause at Christmas by buying at least one gift from a charity shop AND reduce the negative impact on the environment by using recycled and recyclable packaging.

These 3 initiatives helped us to win an award for BEST GREEN BUSINESS 2016 in the Wandsworth Business Awards in December 2016.
