Charity Retail Association launch updated Retail Gift Aid guidance

The Charity Retail Association has launched an updated version of its Retail Gift Aid guidance manual, which is free for all of our members to download.

Retail Gift Aid allows charity shops to claim Gift Aid on the proceeds of sales made on behalf of donors who are taxpayers in the United Kingdom. The scheme raises tens of millions of pounds for good causes every year.

The 54-page document is the most comprehensive information on retail gift aid available, and was originally produced in 2016 in partnership with international accountancy firm BDO. It has been updated to reflect the latest guidance from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. The updated version has two new chapters: Gift Aid claims on recycling (rag), and furniture and electrical sales. Guidance on these subjects are not available anywhere else in the sector.

Our CEO, Robin Osterley, said: “The Retail Gift Aid scheme can be daunting for small or large charities and this guidance will help them administer and remain compliant on what can be an extremely beneficial source of fundraising.

“As the trade body for the sector, we have been working hard to ensure that our members have the best tools to ensure charity shops continue to flourish.”

Our members can download the guide for free. Charities who are members may purchase a copy for £495, and non-charities may purchase a copy for £995, by emailing mail@charityretail.org.uk. However, please note 2018/19 membership fees start from as little as £230.
