Textiles 2030 – Citizen Insights Study

20/10/2022 08:20

Consumer research was undertaken by Textiles 2030 to provide insight into how long people kept their clothes, attitudes to second-hand and buying behaviour.

The study found that more than half (54%) of UK citizens are happy to buy second-hand clothing, compared to 46% who say they deserve better.

The study found that more than half (54%) of UK citizens are happy to buy second-hand clothing, compared to 46% who say they deserve better. Women are more comfortable with second-hand than men with those aged 65+ being least comfortable. Also, more than half (57%) of UK adults said that they looked for ways to repair damaged items. Half of UK adults reported buying at least one item of clothing from a charity shop in a typical year.

Contrary to what might be expected, people kept second-hand clothing purchases for longer than newly purchased clothing (5.4 years versus 4 years). Across both second-hand and new purchases, people were found to keep items for longer than in 2013 when a similar study was conducted. This could reflect an increase in the quality of items available to buy second-hand and/ or a shift to more sustainable consumer behaviour.
